End-of-Year Banking Checklist: Stay Prepared This Holiday Season

December 23, 2024

The holiday season is here, bringing festive get-togethers, gift shopping, and the fast-approaching end of the year. With so much going on, it’s easy to lose track of important banking tasks. To help you stay on top of things, we’ve put together a simple end-of-year banking checklist to keep your finances on track and set you up for a successful 2024.

1. Prepare for Tax Season

Tax season may feel far away, but getting organized now can save you stress later. Depending on your needs, here are a few steps to help with your tax preparation:

  • Download Monthly Bank Statements: Easily access your bank statements through Online Banking. Learn how to download them here.
  • Save Check Images: Keep copies of any significant checks you’ve written this year.
  • Sync with QuickBooks or Quicken: For business accounts, syncing with accounting software like QuickBooks can streamline tax filing. Find out how to sync your account here.

2. Make Interest Payments

If you have a business loan, consider making any final interest payments by December 31 to maximize potential tax benefits. You can make payments:

  • Through Online Banking
  • Over the phone
  • By visiting your local Rivers Edge Bank location

Check our holiday hours and cutoff times here. If you’re unsure about the tax implications, consult your tax advisor for guidance.

3. IRA Contributions and Distributions

If you have an IRA, now is the time to review any contributions or distributions you need to make. Here's what to keep in mind:

  • Contributions: The 2024 limits are $7,000 for individuals under 50 and $8,000 for those 50 and older. You have until April 15, 2025, to make contributions for the 2024 tax year. Be sure to specify which tax year your contribution applies to when you make it.
  • Distributions: If you’re over age 59 ½, you can withdraw from your Traditional IRA without penalties. For those 73 and over, remember to take your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) by December 31, 2024, to avoid penalties.
  • Questions: If you have any questions regarding your IRA contributions or distribution status, feel free to reach out to your local REB location to talk to an IRA team member.  We also advise consulting with your tax advisor to fully understand the tax implications of your IRA activity.

4. Give Back with Charitable Donations

The holiday season is the perfect time to support local charities. Did you know charitable donations can also provide tax benefits if made by year’s end? For maximum impact and potential deductions, consult your tax advisor about the timing and benefits of your donation.

5. Watch for Tax Forms

As we move into 2025, Rivers Edge Bank will begin mailing out important tax forms such as 1098s, 1099s, and IRA documents. Keep an eye out for these starting in late January, and be sure to store them safely for tax filing. For accounts earning less than $10 in interest this year, a 1099 will not be generated.

Stay Ahead This Holiday Season

We know this time of year is packed with celebrations, events, and to-dos. That’s why Rivers Edge Bank is here to help you wrap up 2024 without any financial hiccups. If you have any questions about these year-end banking tasks, don’t hesitate to contact your local Rivers Edge Bank branch.
