How Do I Know If I'm a Potential Target?
Unfortunately, everyone is a potential target for fraudsters in this digital age. It is extremely important to remain vigilant when it comes to potential fraud. There are many ways a bad actor can trick you into getting your account information through social engineering and phishing attacks. We take protecting your data very seriously and have multiple tools in place to keep you safe. We also want to make sure we provide you as many tips as we can to help you bolster your defenses. Here are some tips on how to best protect your info:
Know How the Bank Will Contact You
We will never contact you regarding potential fraud on your account via text or email. This type of communication will always be via phone or an in-person contact. Potentially fraudulent debit card transactions will also be communicated via phone. Text messages will no longer be sent. For more information on the debit card notification process, visit our website at https://riversedge.bank/personal/banking/debit-cards.
Be Wary of "Urgent" Communications
One of the oldest tricks in the book by fraudsters is to create a sense of urgency or emergency. This causes the target to panic and not think clearly about the communication. Any message indicating you need to take immediate action to resolve a payment issue or to login into your account is likely from a scammer trying to get you to act fast before you have time to think about the accuracy of the message.
Information Requests
No representative of the bank will ever contact you and ask for your email address, password, card number, social security number, birthdate, account number, PIN, expiration date, one-time authentication code from a text message/email, or the three-digit security code on the back of your card. Likewise, you will not be asked for answers to security questions if a bank representative has called, emailed, or texted you.
Online and Mobile Banking Logins
We will NEVER send you a link via email or text to log into your Online or Mobile Banking. The Online Banking link will always be available through visiting our website. To log into Mobile Banking, always go to your app and log in through there. Links are used by scammers to divert you to their site where they will try to collect your account information when you type it in.
Multi-Factored Authentication (MFA)
MFA is an electronic authentication method that requires a user to successfully provide two or more pieces of evidence or verification to gain access to the desired website or application. The second mode of verification is often a code that is sent via text or phone call to be entered before fully logging in. We recommend setting up MFA any chance you have on your accounts. Our online and mobile banking platforms now have MFA capabilities. This significantly reduces the risk of someone hacking into your account via your login credentials. NEVER GIVE YOUR AUTHENTICATION CODE TO ANYONE! Bad actors will ask for this code over the phone which will bypass the whole security of the system.
When in Doubt, Hang Up or Don't Click!
If you are ever suspicious about a phone call or link you have received, end the call or don't click the link. Then, reach out to your local Rivers Edge Bank location with any questions you may have. If you have a link, you can hover over the link to see where the link will take you. If you don't recognize the link or if it contains any misspellings, do not follow the link.
