Can You Spot a Scam? Snap Out of It and Protect Yourself Before It's Too Late

October 1, 2025

Every day, thousands of people fall victim to fraudulent emails, texts, and phone calls from scammers posing as banks, government agencies, or even loved ones. With the growth of mobile and online banking, these scams are becoming more common—and more costly.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Americans lost an estimated $12.5 billion to phishing scams and other fraud in 2024—a 25% increase over the previous year.

These criminals are highly skilled at manipulation, often using fear, urgency, or secrecy to pressure people into making quick decisions. At Rivers Edge Bank, we want to help you spot these tactics and stop fraud in its tracks. That’s why we’ve joined banks across the country in the Banks Never Ask That campaign, a nationwide effort to give customers the tools to recognize scams and protect their money.

Five Red Flags That Mean “Snap Out of It”

Pressure to use payment apps

If someone demands you send money quickly through Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or another payment app, snap out of it. Legitimate businesses or banks won’t pressure you like this.

Urgent messages with secrecy

A scammer may contact you out of the blue and say you must act immediately—without telling anyone else. If you’re being pushed into a secret, high-pressure situation, snap out of it.

Suspicious links in texts

Did you get a random text with a link about a package delivery, your account, or a security alert? Don’t click. Instead, go directly to your bank’s app or website for safe access.

Unexpected email attachments

If you weren’t expecting a document or file, don’t open it. Attachments can hide malware designed to steal your information.

Requests for sensitive information

Your bank will never contact you and ask for your PIN, password, or full Social Security number by phone, email, or text. If someone requests it, snap out of it and protect your personal details with these cybersecurity tips.

Stay a Step Ahead of Scammers

You’ve probably seen one or more of these scams before—but scammers never stop trying. The good news is, you can stay one step ahead by being alert and cautious. If something feels “off,” trust your instincts.
